Ethernet Challenges in Industrial Environments

Industrial environments represent a challenge for Ethernet networks, where EMI (electromagnetic interference) can be a concern, temperature range can be more extreme, and installation may be troublesome. These and many other factors may affect its physical implementation.

Empowering Long-Reach Ethernet with POF Technology

POF provides an alternative to copper and glass optical fiber for these cases, complemented by KDPOF technology. This combination is able to support Fast Ethernet (100 Mb/s <) links up to more than 150 meters (Long Reach Mode) and Gigabit Ethernet (1000 Mb/s) over SI-POF using off-the-shelf red LEDs and connectors following the 802.3bv Ethernet standard.

Fast Ethernet Applications

Alternative to Power Over Ethernet (PoE) – 150 Meters Reach

Applications that require Fast Ethernet and the delivery of power for applications such as IP surveillance are normally supported by Ethernet cables and Power Over Ethernet (PoE).

This option has a theoretical limitation of 100 meters, which in the real field could go down to 80 meters. POF cables can incorporate copper wires for this power delivery (hybrid cables).

These hybrid cables, coupled with KDPOF silicon in long reach mode, can extend this 80-meter limitation to 150 meters, thus giving more freedom to network designers and installers to implement Fast Ethernet networks with power delivery.

Large Field Renewable Energy Generation

Solar and wind generation requires control of systems separated by distances that can pass copper-based limitations. The 150-meter support of KDPOF long reach mode suits these use cases very well.

SFP Transceivers

Small form-factor pluggable (SFP) modules are extensively used in the industry as a means of providing flexible connections to network switches. KDPOF PHY allows an efficient implementation of a Fast or Gigabit SFP with a minimum number of chips.
